The Sociology of Work and Occupations (Undergraduate seminar)

This course focuses on work and occupations in the contemporary economy. It explores questions such as whether and how work has changed in the contemporary economy, how workers experience and make sense of these new conditions of work, and how factors such as race, class, and gender play a role in labor market processes and outcomes. This class draws on both quantitative and qualitative studies to explore these questions.

Qualitative Research Methods (Master’s Seminar)

This seminar introduces students to social science research methods. We examine the fundamental issues of designing and conducting empirical research projects, including developing and framing of research questions, inference, sampling, data collection, and decisions regarding research design. We also discuss different modes of empirical research (including experimental, survey, qualitative, archival, machine learning, and simulation). The readings are a mix of textbooks chapters which cover the fundamentals and journal articles that expand on the ideas discussed in the chapters.
